How to Hang Posters Without Damaging Your Walls (or the Poster) – 4 Methods That Actually Work
Share
If you've ever spent half an hour carefully removing duct tape residue from a dorm room wall, or worse, accidentally ripped a chunk of paint off your rented apartment wall, you already know the struggle. Hanging posters should be the easiest part of decorating, yet it's the one thing that causes the most anxiety.
You don't want to ruin the wall, but you also don't want your new prints curling at the edges or falling down in the middle of the night. After scouring countless interior design forums and testing it ourselves, here are the four best ways to hang posters completely damage-free.
1. The Washi Tape + Double-Sided Tape Method (The Reddit Favorite)

This is a brilliant hack if you're dealing with standard paper posters. Washi tape is essentially a low-tack, decorative masking tape that is notoriously gentle on paint. Place small squares of Washi tape directly on your wall where the corners of the poster will go. Then, apply strong double-sided tape on top of the Washi tape, and press your poster onto it. The Washi tape acts as a protective barrier for your paint, while the double-sided tape holds the poster securely.
2. Magnetic Poster Hangers

If you want a look that's slightly more elevated than bare prints but cheaper than glass frames, magnetic hangers are incredible. These consist of two wooden strips embedded with strong magnets. You simply sandwich the top and bottom edges of your poster between the wood. The top piece hangs from a single small nail or command hook, and the bottom piece acts as a weight to keep the poster perfectly flat.
3. Command Poster Strips

There is a reason these are considered the gold standard for renters. Command makes specific strips designed purely for posters (they are much thinner than the heavy-duty picture hanging strips). The trick to making them work is the removal process: you must pull the tab straight down, incredibly slowly, parallel to the wall. If you pull outwards, the paint will come with it.
4. The Ultimate Hack: Pre-Applied Peel & Stick

What if you didn't have to buy tape, strips, or hangers at all? The biggest problem with hanging standard posters is that standard 150 GSM paper curls easily, meaning the tape has to work twice as hard to keep it flat against the wall.
At Art Theory, we solved this from the ground up. Our wall collage kits are printed on industrial-grade 350 GSM premium matte paper—it's incredibly thick, so it never curls. More importantly, they are completely "Peel & Stick" ready. The adhesive is already applied, perfectly balanced to hold the heavy paper securely while still being 100% safe to remove from standard painted walls.
No tools, no peeling paint, no midnight crashes. Explore our Peel & Stick Poster Kits here and decorate without the deposit-losing anxiety.
